What it means
A translation edition is a book published in a second language: not the original with a translated cover, but a new edition whose text has been carried into the other language as a whole — voice, idiom, register — and then produced as a book in its own right. It carries its own ISBN, its own title page and copyright notice crediting the translator, and, in the trade, it is sold under a separate translation rights deal for that language and territory.
Producing it is more than the words. Text expands or contracts — German and Spanish run 15–30% longer than English, Chinese and Japanese far shorter — so the page count and spine change. Typographic conventions change too: « guillemets » in French and Spanish dialogue, „low quotes“ in German, right-to-left mirroring with the spine on the right for Arabic and Hebrew, language-specific hyphenation, and often a different typeface for the script.
A good translation edition reads as if it had been written in the language.
