What it means
Perfect binding is the adhesive binding used for almost every paperback (and, with a case instead of a cover, for most hardcovers). The printed pages are gathered into a block, the spine edge is milled or roughened so the glue can grip each leaf, hot adhesive is applied, and a one-piece wrap cover is pressed on and creased at the spine. Trim on three sides and the book is done.
Two glues are common. EVA hot-melt is cheap and fine for ordinary text books; PUR (polyurethane) is stronger, more flexible, and better for heavy coated paper, cold climates and books that will be opened flat and often. Because the leaves are individually glued, a perfect-bound book does not open flat and the gutter must allow for it.
Practical limits: roughly 32 pages at the low end (thinner books are saddle-stitched) and around 800 pages at the top, beyond which the block is too heavy for its glue.
