What it means
A board book is the toddler's edition: every page, cover included, is a sheet of heavy paperboard, printed, laminated and rounded at the corners so that a child under three can grip, drop, bend and bite it. Pages are counted differently from paper books — a typical board book has 10–24 pages, each thick enough to be turned by small hands — and trims are small, often 5–7 in square.
The format suits very short texts: a few words per spread, bold shapes, high contrast, repetition. Picture books for older children are printed on paper and bound as hardcovers because their longer texts and finer art need more pages than board can hold.
Board books are made on specialist equipment (the printed sheets are mounted onto board and die-cut), so few print-on-demand services offer a true board book; on-demand "toddler" books are usually small hardcovers with paper pages instead.
