# Watermarked proof

A watermarked proof is a typeset PDF with a visible overlay: readable and shareable for review, but not the clean file the printer needs.

## Definition

A **watermarked proof** is a review copy with a mark on it. The pages are the real typeset pages — same trim, same fonts, same breaks — but each carries a visible overlay (a diagonal word, a border, a footer) that identifies it as a proof and makes it unsuitable as a finished product. Designers, typesetters and stock-image libraries have used the device for decades: it lets the client see exactly what they will get without yet owning the deliverable.

For an author the watermarked proof is where the checking happens. Read it for typos, chapter breaks, widows and orphans, running heads and the look of the page; share it with an editor or a beta reader; compare two trim sizes side by side. None of that needs the clean file.

The **clean file** — the same PDF without the mark — is what goes to the printer or the retailer, and it is usually what the money buys.
