A part is a group of chapters — Part One, Part Two — announced by its own title page, marking a large shift in time, place, point of view or act.

## Definition

A **part** (sometimes *book*, as in "Book One") is a division above the chapter. Where chapters are the rhythm of a story, parts are its architecture: a change of year or continent, a switch of narrator, or the three acts of a plot made visible in the table of contents.

A part is introduced by a **part title page** — a recto carrying only the part number and title, sometimes an epigraph, with a blank verso behind it — so the reader feels a real threshold rather than a chapter break. Parts are numbered with words or roman numerals ("Part Two", "Part II") and chapter numbering may continue across parts or restart inside each one; either is fine as long as it is consistent.

Because every part page adds two pages to the book, short books rarely need them. Use parts when the structure would otherwise be invisible.
