The narrator is the voice performing an audiobook — one reader, a full cast, or a synthetic or cloned voice — and the main reason listeners finish it.

## Definition

An audiobook **narrator** is the performer who reads the book aloud. In a single-voice production one narrator carries every character, differentiated by pitch, pace and accent rather than by different voices; a **duet** narration splits alternating points of view between two narrators; a **full-cast** production gives each character an actor. Most novels are single-voice, and listeners' reviews say more about the narrator than about the prose.

Casting matters more than it looks. A narrator whose gender, age and accent match the narrator *of the book* — the first-person memoirist, the detective — is heard as authentic; a mismatch is heard as a mistake. Authors narrating their own memoirs is common and usually welcome; authors narrating their own novels is riskier.

**Synthetic narration** — a house voice, or a cloned voice trained on a short sample of a real person — has become a production option, and stores now accept it under disclosure rules of their own. It makes narration in many languages practical for the first time.
