Lie-flat binding — coil, spiral or wire-o — threads the pages onto a coil through punched holes so the book opens completely flat or folds back on itself.

## Definition

A **lie-flat binding** is any binding that lets the open book rest flat on a table without being held. In print on demand the term almost always means **coil binding** (also *spiral* binding): the pages and cover are punched along the spine edge and a continuous plastic coil is threaded through the holes. **Wire-O** does the same with a double-loop metal wire and a squarer look. Both open 360°, so the book can fold back to a single page.

That is why cookbooks, workbooks, planners, manuals and sheet music are coil bound: the hands are busy and the book must stay open. The trade-offs are a spine with no printable text, a less "bookish" look, and page counts limited by coil diameter — commonly from a few pages up to around 470.

Not every "lay-flat" product is coil. Lay-flat **photo books** use hinged, board-mounted pages, and **Smyth-sewn** hardcovers open flatter than glued ones without any coil.
