Word count → category, genre fit, chapters

By the SFWA's Nebula Award definitions, a short story is under 7,500 words, a novelette 7,500–17,499, a novella 17,500–39,999, and a novel 40,000 words or more. Commercially, most adult novels run 70,000–100,000 words, novellas 20,000–40,000, and a 50,000-word book is a short novel. Enter a word count to see where yours lands.

## Typical lengths by genre

Common industry ranges — what agents, editors and readers usually expect — not rules. Pages are computed for a 6 × 9 paperback in 11-point type.

| Genre | Typical range | About how many pages (6 × 9, 11 pt) | Notes |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Literary fiction | 70,000–100,000 words | 213–334 | Shorter literary novels exist, but 70k–100k is the common expectation. |
| Thriller / mystery | 70,000–90,000 words | 213–300 | Pace matters more than length; cozies sit at the low end. |
| Romance | 50,000–90,000 words | 152–300 | Category (line) romance is usually 50k–60k; single-title runs longer. |
| Science fiction / fantasy | 90,000–120,000 words | 273–400 | Epic fantasy often runs to 150k and beyond; world-building earns the room. |
| Young adult | 50,000–80,000 words | 152–267 | YA fantasy stretches toward the top; contemporary YA sits lower. |
| Middle grade | 20,000–55,000 words | 61–184 | Younger middle grade is short; upper middle grade approaches 55k. |
| Memoir | 60,000–90,000 words | 182–300 | A memoir is shaped like a novel and usually sized like one. |
| Non-fiction (general) | 50,000–80,000 words | 152–267 | Business and self-help often sit at 40k–60k; big-idea books run longer. |
| Novella | 20,000–40,000 words | 61–134 | Publishing usage; the SFWA definition is 17,500–39,999. |
| Picture book | 500–1,000 words | Set by the spreads, not the words | Many are under 500 words; the art carries the story. |

## The formal categories

The only widely used formal definitions of story length come from the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association, whose Nebula Award rules divide fiction into four categories by word count: **short story** under 7,500 words, **novelette** 7,500–17,499, **novella** 17,500–39,999, and **novel** 40,000 and above. The Hugo Awards use the same boundaries. Outside awards, "novelette" is rarely used — publishers speak of short stories, novellas and novels — and "flash fiction" is the informal name for the very short end of the short story, usually under 1,000 words.

Those lines are definitions, not expectations. A 40,000-word manuscript is a novel by the rulebook and a short one by any bookshop's standards, which is why the genre ranges matter more to a writer than the category does.

| Category | Word count (SFWA) | About how many pages (6 × 9, 11 pt) |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Short story | under 7,500 words | up to 25 |
| Novelette | 7,500–17,499 words | up to 59 |
| Novella | 17,500–39,999 words | up to 134 |
| Novel | 40,000 words and up | 122 and up |

## Reading the genre ranges

The ranges in the table above are the lengths agents, editors and readers commonly expect — conventions, not rules, and every one of them has famous exceptions. They exist because readers of a genre have learned what a satisfying book of that kind feels like in the hand: a thriller that runs to 140,000 words has probably lost its pace, and an epic fantasy at 60,000 has probably not built its world. Debut novels are usually advised to sit in the middle of the range rather than at either edge. The pages column is computed for a 6 × 9 paperback in 11-point type, the most common trade size; the [words to pages calculator](https://www.infinitelibrary.ai/calculators/words-to-pages) gives the other trims.

## How long is a novella?

A novella is **17,500–39,999 words** by the SFWA definition and **about 20,000–40,000** in everyday publishing use — long enough for a single sustained arc with real development, short enough to read in an evening. It sits between the short story, which turns on one moment, and the novel, which has room for subplots. Well-known examples cluster around 30,000 words: *Of Mice and Men* and *Animal Farm* are both roughly that length. In print, 20,000–40,000 words is about 61–134 pages at 6 × 9 — slim, which is why novellas are often set in a smaller 5 × 8 trim, where the same text runs 72–160 pages and feels more like a book.

Science fiction and fantasy in particular keep the novella alive — the Hugo and Nebula awards both have a novella category — and romance and horror publish it widely as ebooks. Our [guide to writing a novella](https://www.infinitelibrary.ai/guides/how-to-write-a-novella) covers the structure that makes the length work.

## Is 50,000 words a novel?

Yes, by definition — and a short one by convention. 50,000 words clears the 40,000-word line comfortably, and the NaNoWriMo target has made it the most familiar length for a first draft. *The Great Gatsby* is about 47,000 words. But most adult fiction categories start at 70,000, so a 50,000-word manuscript is on the short side for a debut thriller or literary novel and squarely in range for category romance (50,000–60,000), young adult (50,000–80,000), upper middle grade and much non-fiction. In print it is 152–167 pages at 6 × 9 or 179–200 at 5 × 8 — a real book, if a slim one.

Our [50,000-word novel guide](https://www.infinitelibrary.ai/guides/how-to-write-a-50000-word-novel) covers which stories suit the length and how to plan one; if the story needs more room, the [100,000-word novel guide](https://www.infinitelibrary.ai/guides/how-to-write-a-100000-word-novel) is the other end of the shelf.

## How many chapters should a novel have?

Chapter count follows from two decisions — the length of the book and the average length of a chapter — so there is no right number, only a right average. Most novel chapters run **2,000–5,000 words**, with the commercial-fiction average around 2,000–3,500: thrillers and romance sit at the short end for pace, literary and epic fiction at the long end for immersion. Divide, and a 50,000-word novel has about 13–25 chapters at a 2,000–4,000-word average (33 if the chapters are a brisk 1,500), an 80,000-word novel 20–40, and a 100,000-word novel 25–50.

The table gives the count at each common average. Readers feel the average more than the count: a book of 1,500-word chapters reads as breathless whatever its length, and one of 4,000-word chapters as unhurried. | Novel length | 1,500-word chapters | 2,000-word chapters | 2,500-word chapters | 3,000-word chapters | 4,000-word chapters |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 40,000 words | 27 | 20 | 16 | 13 | 10 |
| 50,000 words | 33 | 25 | 20 | 17 | 13 |
| 60,000 words | 40 | 30 | 24 | 20 | 15 |
| 70,000 words | 47 | 35 | 28 | 23 | 18 |
| 80,000 words | 53 | 40 | 32 | 27 | 20 |
| 90,000 words | 60 | 45 | 36 | 30 | 23 |
| 100,000 words | 67 | 50 | 40 | 33 | 25 |
| 120,000 words | 80 | 60 | 48 | 40 | 30 |

## Why the industry counts words, not pages

Agents, editors and contests ask for word count because it is the only length measure that does not depend on formatting. The same 80,000 words is about 320 double-spaced manuscript pages, 243–267 pages in a 6 × 9 paperback, and 286–320 in a 5 × 8, before front matter and chapter openings. When you do need pages — to price a print run, size a spine or judge shelf presence — convert with the trim you will actually print, which is what Bindery does automatically: it typesets the manuscript, counts the real pages and sizes the spine from that count.

## FAQ

### How many words are in a novella?

17,500–39,999 words by the SFWA definition used for the Nebula and Hugo awards; in everyday publishing use, about 20,000–40,000. Of Mice and Men and Animal Farm are both roughly 30,000 words.

### How many words is a novel?

At least 40,000 words by the SFWA definition, but commercial expectations are higher: most adult novels run 70,000–100,000 words, science fiction and fantasy 90,000–120,000, young adult 50,000–80,000, and category romance 50,000–60,000.

### Is 40,000 words a novel?

Formally yes — 40,000 is the SFWA threshold. Commercially it is a very short novel, below the 70,000-word floor most adult genres expect; it fits middle grade, some romance lines and short non-fiction better than a debut thriller or literary novel.

### How many chapters should a 50,000-word novel have?

About 13–25 at the usual 2,000–4,000 words a chapter: 25 chapters at 2,000 words, 20 at 2,500, 13 at 4,000. Brisk 1,500-word chapters push it to about 33. The average chapter length matters more to the reader than the count.

### How long is a short story?

Under 7,500 words by the SFWA definition. Flash fiction is the informal name for stories under about 1,000 words, and stories of 7,500–17,499 words are novelettes.

### How long should a first novel be?

Common industry advice is 70,000–90,000 words for most adult genres — inside the typical range but not at its top, because long books cost more to print and agents often ask debuts to stay inside the range. Young adult debuts usually run 50,000–80,000, and science fiction and fantasy can go to 100,000–120,000.
